This last song of a dying soldier preparing to wed Death was inspired by a centuries-old Cossack folk song, "Černyj voron."

"The Donets in the Caucasus in 1801-1864 During a hard struggle with the Caucasian mountaineers, many Don Cossacks feared, many of them had to defend themselves from numerous and the spiteful enemy. The feats committed by the Don Cossacks during this sixty-year war are so numerous that it is impossible to enumerate them all. Many Cossacks died in the mountains and valleys of the Caucasus and over their unknown graves, there is neither a cross nor a memory Those who died alone, without witnesses, the Don died in the mountains, surrounded by crows and ravenous eagles, where this sad song of the Cossacks also originated." -- From the book of General Pyotr Krasnov "The Pictures of the Past Quiet Don" (1909)
